The Force Awakens Opening Shot Was Gonna Be Weird
Mark Hammel has recently confirmed that The Force Awakens was going to have a much different opening. The movie would begin with Luke Skywalker’s severed hand clutching a lightsaber drifting through space and landing on the planet Jakku. Then the lightsaber would be picked up by an alien hand.
Weird, right? Presumably this had would be Maz’ hand, and she’s ended up with the lightsaber, but a hand in space is a weird way to start a film. How would it get there? Do dead hands still cling to lightsabers? What are the odds of it landing on a planet, and how far is Jakku from Cloud City?
“I can tell you now that in the original opening shot of VII, the first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber, a severed hand that enters the atmosphere, and then the hand and bone burns away and goes sticking into the surface of Jakku, and this alien hand comes in — I don’t know if it was Maz but it was an alien hand who takes the lightsaber way — and then the movie proceeds as you see it,” Hammel said recently.
Hopefully the real story of how Maz ended up with the Anikin/Luke lightsaber is much more interesting.
