Opening Crawl Speculation
Last month, you may have heard that Lucasfilm and Disney were struggling to decide whether the stand-alone ‘Star Wars Story’ films like Rogue One, should have the classic opening crawl.
It seems like they’ve decided not to include it, which’ll make Rogue One the first Star Wars film not to have the crawl.
Kathleen Kennedy and Gareth Edwards spoke to Entertainment Tonight to ‘tease’ the answer, but it seems like they’ve made their decision
“You know, we’re in the midst of talking about it, but I don’t think these films will have an opening crawl,” Kennedy said of the possibility thatRogue One would include the familiar Star Wars trope. “I think that’s what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today.” [Kathleen Kennedy]
Edwards left the question a bit more up in the air. “I think basically there’s a lot of things that I probably can’t talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that,” he joked. “The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films…the whole crawl of it all — it’s funny people are fascinated on that.”
Leaving out the crawl will further separate Rogue One from the main saga. Today it was announced that Episode 8 will pick up exactly where Force Awakens left off, making it the first Star Wars film not to skip forward in time. So, what exactly will the opening crawl do if not bring us up to speed? Odds are it it’ll sum up the impact of the destruction of the Hosnian system/New Republic.
