Poe Dameron Comic Coming Soon
The new canon Star Wars comics have been almost universally praised by fans, with seemingly any major player in the Star Wars universe getting their own stand-alone story with Leia, Lando and Chewbacca featuring in their own excellent adventures. The new generation featured in The Force Awakens are now getting their own stand-alone stories, starting with a Poe Dameron comic.
It makes sense to have Poe be the first to feature in a comic, as Poe’s parents appeared in the Shattered Empire series of comics which take place just after the Battle of Endor. This is a nice link to the original series, although Star Wars could be said to have a bit of an over reliance on linking relatively few characters fates together (in what must be a universe of trillions of people), having Poes parents be rebel fighters when Poe himself grows up to be a Resistance fighters doesn’t seem to be too much of a stretch.
The series will cover Poe’s career as part of the Resistance’s squadron of pilots before the events of The Force Awakens. We’ve seen a snapshot of Poe before in the Before the Awakening book, but this will really flesh out the character and give more insight into the early conflict between the First Order, the New Republic, and the Resistance. When The Force Awakens hit cinemas, it wasn’t immediately obvious what the political situation was in the Galaxy. A lot of fans were confused as to who was ruling the Galaxy, and how the Resistance was related to the New Republic, so it’ll be interesting to see more background on how the Resistance worked and what information they had about the rising threat of the First Order before the events of The Force Awakens.
Writer Charles Soule and artist Phil Noto recently spoke to comicbookresources.com where they talked a little about the story they wanted to tell
It’s set before “The Force Awakens.” The New Republic and the First Order are in a position of detente, and while there have been a few small skirmishes between the Resistance and the First Order, it’s very much a sort of cold war. That said, the “Star Wars” galaxy is a dangerous place, and the First Order isn’t the only opponent Poe will face.
Really exciting stuff, as the Lucas Story Group has shown that you don’t have to rely too heavily on Force sensitive in the Galaxy to make a compelling story, much of the new Canon media has focused on solders in the war who may not even believe in The Force.
Everyone’s favourite adorable droid BB-8 will also feature heavily in the comic, and Soule and Noto have said that we’ll “also see a bunch of characters that readers will recognize from “The Force Awakens,” as well as new and old faces from across the Star Wars galaxy.”
They briefly described the villain, an intelligence officer in the First Order with some ties to the old Empire. They’ve described the character as ‘an older guy’ and made parallels to Grand Moff Tarkin. Many thought that the new film was lacking a character like Tarkin (as much as I love Domhnall Gleeson, I feel that character should have been played by and older actor) so this new villain may fill that gap in the new generation.
The first in the Poe Dameron series will be out 8th of April will be available from Amazon, as well as all book and comic shops. Once you’ve read it be sure to mark it as Completed and leave a review. Be sure to check out the other Star Wars Canon Comics available now.
